Sometimes its three 1/4 notes; at other times I have a dotted 1/4 then 1/8 then 1/4. The common thread is that in all cases I have three consecutive notes and I want to put the line over them with 3 on top to show the triplet. To make the 1/4 note triplets seem to cross the bar line in MuseScore here is what I would do: Select the two measures the tuplet will cross use the menu Edit->Measure->Join selected measures.
