The 796 is a decent bike, but way over priced. But, if you're on a budget and need a new Ducati, this one makes the most sense. The 1100 is a great bike, but again, the pricing feels like a kick in the balls. The Street Triple R is a great bike that's fairly priced, and has seen some incremental improvements over the last few years.

If you want a naked or scrambler, then go for a used Monster (696 or 796) or Scrambler. If you eventually want a Panigale, then I would advise that you start with another brand of sport bike with less power. Look into the KTM RC390, for example. Your decision on a first bike shouldn't really be brand specific, but where you want to be in a year ...

If the choice is Speed Triple of 1100 Evo, Speed Triple all day long with my money. Street vs 1100 Evo, I'd go Evo but understand that Triumph maintenance in those years is closer to Japanese bike maintenance. The Ducati will require more attention and more expensive service costs.
